✨Healthiest Grocery Picks: 3 Helpful Tips!🍎
The grocery stores can be intimidating and stress inducing place if you’re trying to make healthy choices.
For some, it can be frustrating because of decision fatigue – SO many options.
Perhaps, you feel “tempted” by all of the treats and find it hard to want to choose healthy foods.
For others, it can feel stressful and overwhelming because you don’t want to make a “wrong” choice. You want to make the healthiest choices, but are confused or fearful of choosing the wrong foods.
I used to stress HARD about buying the healthiest of healthy foods (to my demise).
Here’s the thing… You can make healthy choices without having to stress over the microscopic details of calories, protein, carbs, and fat.
There’s a 20% margin of error allowed on food labels anyway (the numbers can legally be reported over or under by 20%).
That means a 100 calorie bar may actually be 120 calories… or 80 calories… or 101 calories.
So zooming in that much to make your choices really isn’t helpful.
Here are three tips that can help you have a better relationship with food and the grocery store:
1️⃣Zoom out to the bigger picture and think about starting with food quality and choosing whole, nutrient dense foods the majority of the time over trying to play Tetris with macros.
2️⃣Think about nutrients, but as food. When someone asks you what you want for dinner, you don’t typically say, “Hmm I really feel like I want 35% protein, 40% carbs and 25% fats. That sounds really good.”
No. You’d probably say something like, “Stir fry with some rice, veggies, and beef sounds awesome.”
It’s good to have a basic understanding of what is in food to build a balanced and nutritious meal, but thinking about it as food instead of numbers will help with the mindset and relationship with food to make it more enjoyable and satisfying.
3️⃣Think about how those foods will fuel your body and lifestyle. Think about what foods you enjoy eating. Choose a mix that honors both.
💛Practice these tips when planning meals + grocery trips to help you fuel your body well, and enjoy the process!
